7. The futurity will be held in connection with approved AQHA shows. Exhibitors must meet AQHA eligibility rules. A given futurity class will be judged separately from the corresponding AQHA class, except Reining which may be run concurrently. All futurity classes will be judged in accordance with AQHA rules except for the Yearling Longe Line class which will be judged by the Longe Line Rules (see Number 27 below).
8. Ties will be broken by the greatest number of first places. If a tie still exists, the greatest number of seconds, and so on, will be counted until the tie is broken. If the tie cannot be broken in this manner, tied entries shall share the title and monies.
9. Futurity entries must be shown under all four judges in their futurity class, except for weanlings and reining which will show only at the second split/combined show.
10. Owner and exhibitor must be members of Southwest Quarter Horse Association even if showing another breed in longe line. For a definition of member on this web site see Show Entry, Reservation Links and Contest Rules; Download Contest Rules; Section III. For a membership application on this web site, see About Us and print off the application.
11. AQHA registration papers are required on ALL entries before being allowed to show. Papers for ALL entries must accompany initial payment except weanlings, as stated in #3 above and #12 below. EXCEPTION: For non-AQHA registered entries in Yearling Longe Line Futurity see YEARLING LONGE LINE FUTURITY CLASS below.
12. Weanlings MUST have AQHA registration papers at time of futurities. Weanlings MUST have registered name to be shown. If a colt has an AQHA registration marked "Stallion" and has been gelded before the futurity, the show secretary can change the papers to Gelding before the class at the futurity show.
13. Owners of unnamed foals must submit completed identification and drawings showing color and markings of the foal with the initial nomination.
14. If a colt is gelded, he will be transferred to his corresponding gelding class.
15. Change of ownership does not void a nomination. Purchaser must be a member of SWQHA by the time the horse is exhibited. Notification of nominated horse sale to the Futurity Chairman would be appreciated.
16. SWQHA reserves the right to cancel these futurities due to extenuating circumstances and all fees will be refunded.
17. No fees will be refunded in case of inability of a horse to show except in the case of death, substantiated by a death certificate. In such cases, monies will be refunded less 10%. There may be no substitutions.
18. Classes will be held even if only one horse enters a futurity class to preserve the Consecutive Futurity Program.
19. Drug testing will be in effect. All monies will be held until results are obtained.
20. Any questions arising concerning rules set forth here will be reviewed by the Southwest Quarter Horse Association Board of Directors. Their decision is final.
21. A futurity booklet, complete with ads, will be published. All monies from the ads will be added to the Futurity pay-back.
22. Separate entry numbers will not be required for futurity classes.
23. Special Award to
LEADING FUTURITY SIRE: Awarded to the
owner of the stallion whose offspring, collectively, win the most
money at the given
year Futurity.
24. Special Award to the TOP EXHIBITOR: Awarded to the exhibitor (open, amateur or youth) who exhibits horses winning the most total money at the given year Futurity. Person must exhibit a horse all days in classes to be eligible to count monies for that class.
25. Special Award to PREMIER OWNER: Awarded to the owner whose horse(s) win the most points counted according to Rule B in Consecutive Futurity Program.
26. Special Award to CONSECUTIVE FUTURITY WINNER:
A. A horse must be entered every
year from yearling through three year-old. Each horse
that enters the futurity in every consecutive year will be eligible
to win an overall award at its three year-old year based on total
points.
B. Points are accumulated by the
number of horses that the entrant has beaten during this time
period. Example: If there are six horses in a class,
the first place horse would receive six points; second place would
receive five points; third place would receive four points, and so
on.
C. The horse may be entered as a
weanling, if so, those points will count.
D. Horse must show at halter either
in their weanling, yearling or two year-old year to be eligible for
the Consecutive Futurity award. Longe Line points will also
count toward the total.
E. Eligible horses entered in this
program do not have to be owned by the same owner.
Notification
of nominated horse sale to the Futurity Chairman would be
appreciated.
F. The first award year for
this program was 1989.
G. All futurity horses that enter
the Consecutive Program will be given a 10% discount on futurity
entry fees after their first year of showing.
27. YEARLING LONGE LINE FUTURITY
CLASS:
THESE RULES APPLY ONLY TO THE YEARLING LONGE LINE
CLASS.
A.
ELIGIBILITY: The Yearling Longe Line Futurity Class will be
open to registered papered horses in any recognized
breed association. A copy of the registration paper of those
horses must be on file with the Futurity Chairman prior to
showing.
B. PURPOSE: The purpose of
this class is to reward quality of movement, conformation and
trainability.
C. EQUIPMENT: Horses are to be
shown in a halter, regular or show type is acceptable. For
the longe demonstration, the only attachment allowed on the halter
is the longe line. The longe line may not exceed 30 feet in
length with a chain or snap attached to the halter. The longe
line must hang free from the halter without touching any part of
the horse. It is permissible to use a long whip. No
other equipment is allowed on the horse during the class.
Mechanical or retractable longe lines are not allowed.
D. ATTIRE: Conventional
Western Attire is mandatory except if a prospect is considered to
be a Hunt Seat prospect, then conventional English attire is
appropriate. If there
are five or more each of Western and English horses, the class will
be divided into a Western Yearling Longe Line Futurity Class and an
English Yearling Longe Line Futurity Class. Exhibitors
must declare by the August 1st entry deadline if they will be
showing in English attire.
E. HALTER & JUDGING:
Yearling will be led to the judge at a walk. Horse will be
set up for inspection. After inspection, the entry will trot
around cone to line up. Judge may or may not walk down the
line-up. After halter inspection, horses will be asked to
retire to the ends of the arena. For conformation judging,
the exhibitor may change over to a lead shank in place of the longe
line. The lead shank or longe line chain may only be used
under the chin, over the nose or hanging from the halter.
F. LONGE LINE & JUDGING:
The exhibitor will be allowed one and one-half minutes to present
their horse. At the end of the one and one-half minutes, the
whistle will be blown to signify the end of the run. Show
management has the option of adding a half way whistle
or call , if they choose. The horse will be judged at the
walk, jog or long trot, and lope or canter in both
directions. Any horse that does not exhibit these gaits in
each direction will be disqualified from the class. The
exhibitor may begin work in the direction of their choice
(clockwise or counter-clockwise). Time will start after horse
begins to walk. Horses are to stand quietly on the wall while
the other exhibitors are being judged. Exhibitors are
encouraged to exhibit their horse making full use of a 20 foot
radius circle.
G. JUDGING CRITERIA: The
horses are judged 70% on movement and 30% on conformation. If
the horses nose, mouth or jaw area show signs of broken skin,
rawness or bleeding, the horse will be eliminated from
competition. If the horse is playing on the longe line, it
shall not count against the horse. The horse should be judged
as though the pleasure prospect was playing in the fields.
The judge may, at his/her discretion, penalize the horse for
excessive bucking or running off or displaying attitudes that are
uncomplimentary to pleasure horses such as excessive ear pinning or
tail wringing.
H. An exhibitor may only show one
horse in each longe line class. The same exhibitor must show
both segments of the class.
I. If a yearling is considered to be
a Hunt Seat prospect, then it shall be braided and shown at the
walk, long trot and canter.
